Teaching Strategies Used to Promote Active Learning Essay

Active Learning According to the book Promoting Active Learning by Chet Meyers and Thomas Jones and referenced by Kathleen McKinney, active learning means (1) that learning is by nature an active endeavor and (2) that different people learn in different ways. The first segment of the definition by nature an active endeavor is important because it allows the student to develop her critical thinking skills as well as practice her writing techniques. The student can discuss class material in a less formal setting, which can be beneficial in creating more open-ended discussions for the student. As a teacher, promoting various learning styles is critical because one student learn differently than another. Students can use a variety of items such as board games, card games, and dice games incorporating material that students are required to learn. Dice can be used for math conc epts, where students can throw many dice and use arithmetic for two or more of the dice. Teachers are responsible to prepare the games in order to allow students to learn a lesson plan. They need to make sure the students are kept on task and are all participating. Teachers must assess how effective these games are by walking around the classroom and noticing if most students are discussing the material. Giving the students a test or a quiz to analyze if they have learned what they needed can be a way to asses students. A game allows students to think critically much like debates do also. Debates can allow students to learn actively. Teachers can allow students to either pick one side of an issue and come to class prepared to defend that side, or to research both sides and prepare for both options. If the teacher has the students prepare both sides, he can either delegate which side each student will represent or let the students choose. Having students research allows stude nts to broaden their perspective on local and global issues. It is vital that students are prepared for the debate and teachers need to facilitate it.
